Giorgia Meloni’s allies are exploring changes to Italy’s election laws that would boost her reelection odds, as internal polls show she may struggle to retain a majority in the upper house of parliament.

The prime minister is at risk of a stalemate in Italy’s Senate after the next general election, according to the polls. In response, the government is considering legal proposals that could help Meloni’s team secure more parliament seats, according to people familiar with the matter.

They could present their plan by the end of the year, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The next election will occur by 2027 at the latest.

“proposal to dole out all seats proportionally, but with a majority bonus for the leading coalition to give it a stable voting bloc, the people said. Under one scenario, a coalition winning 40% of the vote would get up to 55% of the seats”

Anyone who supports such solution is a literal scum.

Oh my god. These spokespersons always want anonymity, they will always be protected by anonymity since they’re connected to some government, organization or corporation. But they want everyone else’s anonymity gone.

Well, its not a coincidence that she was supported by Orbán. Checks and balances are much stronger in Italy than in Hungary so her trying to do these things usually dont worrk but the willingnes is there

This is not good. Changing voting laws to favour one party or the other was done in Romania, since 2011, also each election since 2008 was decided to be in very inconvenient calendar days (long weekends usually ) when people that would not vote for them will be in a short vacation. Latest one is when the corrupt party wanted the election of the new mayor of Bucharest take place on 30 November ( national holiday ) – they failed with that date this time.

Pretty sure she will get very vocal support from Orange Felon.

They pulled something similar in Greece a few years ago if memory serves… basically a guarantee of minority rule.

And people still say the far right is not a threat to democracy……

The Italian system currently is a bit nonsensical as the government needs the confidence of both houses which contributes to lots of instability.

However, this is not a solution. I would just switch to the system used by most bicameral systems where the government needs the support of just the lower house.

This is the exact same dogshit system Orban created in Hungary. What’s interesting is this system is called “winner’s compensation”, and it was ruled undemocratic and unlawful in ITALY of all places.

Please vote this goddamn cunt out the earliest you can, we need to clean out these populist budget dictator shitbags. Hope we will lead with example in Hungary within a few months.

Italy’s current system is also shit, but this is essentially taking a page out of the Orbán playbook. (well would be, but in this case, it’s more like the Mussolini playbook)

that’s not good, you are doing a good job Ms. Meloni, don’t spoil it by playing the Orban-esque tricks on democracy

Every Italian government that lasts long enough changes Voting Laws to help “stability”. They always lose the following elections, often because of the same law they pushed to adopt.

That photo makes her look like she’s Greg Davies’ assistant.

      That’s not little Alex Horne?

When conservatives can’t win democratically, they don’t change their politics but democracy.

Is anyone surprised that Mussolini’s granddaughter would do something like this? /s

    17. i thought she was massively popular. Does she have worries of re-election?

    18. MiguelIstNeugierig on

Hey guys what if your vote has less value than someone’s that is voting for the ruling government?

    19. Independent-Slide-79 on

Of course a right wingers politician wants to make it as hard as possible to get rid of her. They hate democracy

    20. Illesbogar on

The so called “not a fascist, but a moderate conservative” Meloni

    21. LiveTechnoCook on

The problem is that many people believe: Democracy is when there are elections.

And they do not care for the nuances. So you can get away with a lot of shit by keeping up appearences.

Will you look at that, another right-wing politician taking an axe to democracy
