We have one housing minister yes, what about second housing minister?

    2. miju-irl on

Was surprised to read this, I could have sworn this was shot down months ago.

Why do we need a housing tsar when we have a housing minister?

This country is an absolute joke, I only wish I didn’t love her so much, it just caused me pain

    4. denbo786 on

Well fuck no one works for free. In all seriousness, that’s crazy money for a joke of a job.

    5. Another positioned designed to take the heat off the minister for housing

Stupid idea to appoint a ‘tsar.’ And even if it was a good idea, that salary isn’t sufficient to attract someone with enough senior experience to make an appreciable difference to the housing crisis.

Solving the housing crisis will require a cultural change at governmental level, which is utterly beyond the imagination of FF and FG.

Housing fetish is incredibly strong in this country. Bet lots of people are into housing tsar roleplay and landlord/tenant relationship stuff…

    8. A-Hind-D on

I’ll do it and have the same impact.

Solution: “stop being poor, it’s offensive”

    9. Gingernut-i80 on

It’s a ‘do the work’ but even more so ‘take the blame’ position. That salary isn’t going to bring in the likes of a CEO or head of operations of a large corporation, if that is what they are thinking. One person no matter who they are is not going to fix this.

    10. Odd-Internal-3983 on

I imagine it will allow a temp figure to play some tricks that would be political suicide for an actual minister. Then they’d disappear behind a tribunal smokescreen.

€217,000 a year. Not bad. Could afford a decent house with thaaaatttt…….hmm. MKay.

    12. Data111222 on

If they redeployed another role to be solely responsible for Housing Delivery and their “Housing Tsar” that way, it’d be one thing. But you can bet that this person will either come from the private sector, or their original role will be backfilled if they come from the public sector.

      Job Description:-
Wanted:- Someone to pander to and offer huge incentives to developers.

I just picture Jafar from Aladdin every time the elusive ‘Tsar’ gets mentioned

    15. SoloWingPixy88 on

Stop calling it a fecking Tsar. Media actively trying to sabotage the job and frame it as a poison chalice even before someone is hired

    16. GeminiBlind on

He’s somehow going to find a way to solve it that the actual minister can’t?

    17. Apprehensive_Ratio80 on

See they’re advertising for construction workers to come home.

‘You built Toronto/Perth/Sydney/Auckland now come home and build Ireland…..there is nowhere for you to live, schools are packed!! Hospitals are sh!t you won’t get good healthcare, wages are worse, you will have to commute for hours, weather is terrible for longer periods….. It come on home so you can help fix what we’re too greedy to fix ourselves now’

    18. earth-calling-karma on

Pay me 18k per month grand but I won’t take the job unless there’s a house.

    19. YourFaveNightmare on

And then we can go for a “Tsar of Housing” and then also a “Tsar to deal with the housing problem” and then a “Tsar to look into housing for people” and then a “Housing for the people Tsar” etc etc etc

    20. I thought we were meant to be getting rid of all the layers of management?

    21. VitaminRitalin on

A housing tsar yeah? Oh wonderful, can’t wait for all the Potemkin affordable housing developments!

    22. Kloppite16 on

Well as a descendant of Ivan the Terrible myself I’ll definitely be applying for this €217k plus expenses job.

Eat the rich will be my only policy.

Blanket higher density zoning around all major city transit hubs.

      Abolish an bord pleanala

Set up a dedicated credit facility for developers to borrow from rather than relying on foreign investment funds.

If a developer wants to build just rentals, 20% or more should have to be a for sale product – +-30,000 “units” a yr are built currently, id say more than 2/3 are rentals from funds that never hit the market for sale.

Abolish local needs planning laws, tons of people want to build on family land etc aren’t allowed to adding to housing demand.

Developers shouldnt be allowed to build communities with out building the infrastructure, bus stops etc and a school within 3 yrs of starting.

Abolish Irish water – anyone that’s ever dealt with them on a large project in Dublin will agree, fuckin useless.

The government should JV with developers or the council on land they already hold.

Create a tax insensitive or something to attract Irish trades back from abroad, we can have all these goals and targets but if we don’t have enough people to build we are fucked.

Your welcome government, €217k invoice is in the mail 👌

    24. Not-ChatGPT4 on

Fun fact: “Tsar” is a Russian version of “Ceasar”, to imply that the tsar is an emperor with supreme powers. Now in Ireland it means a civil servant.

    25. TheOriginalMattMan on

Look at the government trying to fix this overnight.

    26. No-Outside6067 on

Hang on didn’t they try this before and had to walk it back after the opposition rightly called it out as another job for the boys

    27. NocturneFogg on

Wanted : Someone to be scape goat for decades of bad policy and who will absolve government of political responsibility.

    28. Terrible-Formal-2516 on

Will they have any legal powers to help clear these roadblocks etc otherwise what can they really do?
