Less than 24 hours after drones were spotted near the Kleine-Brogel military air base in Peer, Limburg, there have been further reports of drones in the area. A police helicopter gave chase, but without success.
The drones were spotted at the military air base around 6.30 p.m. The police were immediately alerted and deployed a helicopter to pursue the drones and locate the pilots. The aircraft were believed to be flying in the direction of the Netherlands. Those responsible were ultimately not found.
During the night from Friday to Saturday, an employee of the barracks noticed one or more drones in the vicinity of the air force base around midnight. The police were notified, but were unable to locate the possible pilots. ‘Flying drones over military quarters is strictly prohibited. The Ministry of Defence must do everything in its power to bring down these drones,’ Theo Francken (Minister of Defence) responded on Saturday afternoon on social media platform X.
The repeated violations of the airspace above the strategically important base are causing growing concern. The mayor of Peer, Steven Matheï (CD&V), had already expressed his concerns about the unstable geopolitical situation and urged increased vigilance.
Kleine-Brogel is an extremely sensitive location, given the suspected storage of nuclear weapons and the future housing of F-35 fighter jets. The incidents in Limburg follow earlier suspicious drone flights over the military domains of Elsenborn and Marche-en-Famenne. In those cases, multiple drones were involved, often organised and operating at night.
*The good news*: detection was rapid, authorities were prepared this time and there was a quick reaction.
*The bad news*: apart from a helicopter chase, there is not much that can be done for now. MoD has admitted that they do not have the material to shoot it down right now. It will take weeks (if not months) to get the right material. And I believe it is the same in many other European countries. The Russians are taking the piss basically.
Aren’t all consumer/enterprise drones with a camera [required to have RemoteID](https://enterprise-insights.dji.com/blog/navigating-remote-id-compliance-for-drone-operations-in-the-eu) now? So that should rule out someone just being careless.
Just shut them down. It is nobody’s so noone will care.

Weren’t they just saying how they would “level” Moscow if it comes to it, but they are not able to catch couple of drones over their most sensitive Air Force Base?
