Guess they dont give a fuck about the GAA over there either. Those 80 people should be named and shamed for supporting a convicted rapist. Especially the ones educating our children.
“Well he never tried to rape me so it can’t be true”.
The social pressure these references would have put on a victim based in the local Irish community would have been immense.
Absolute scumbags, the lot of them.
These letters were sent after his conviction, not after an accusation. The judge in sentencing called this an “act of extraordinary sexual violence”. Judges do not use that kind of language in a he said/ she said situation.
There are teachers who are responsible for the safety of young children in these letters.
For his colleagues and the gombeen members of the clergy who also wrote those letters, I can only hope they have some moment of realisation of who they are defending when they see young relatives heading out for an evening, not certain of who they’ll meet.
80 people for background checks
Ha imagine putting pen to paper for a rapist that’s defense was he had a wank in the bed the day before he even arrived.
The religious character letters always get me
“He’s a decent guy, apart from the raping”.
Every woman knows a rape victim but no man ever seems to know a rapist.
If you’re going down you’re going down. Surely any time shaved off by the judge is exactly nil for character references?
This guy was able to get 80 people to support him after he was convicted, yet people call his wife out for not divorcing him the second he was accused.
Looks like the in the USA that if you commit a heinous crime you get sentenced and punished accordingly.
The fact that you kicked a point in the U16 final doesn’t come into play when judging whether you should have raped someone. Anyone giving a character reference in a rape trial is a scumbag themselves.
Anyone submitting a character letter should be ordered to read it out in Court and be cross-examined on it.
He found a woman in the bed opposite him and decided to rape her while she slept. How to you handwave that away?
It’s so hard for people to get their heads around the idea that the vast majority of rapists are just normal fellas who aren’t spending all their time cutting about in a dirty mac flashing schoolgirls. They’re husbands, fathers, teachers, firemen, people who treat their families and friends well, people you’d have a pint with.
It doesn’t really cover our country in glory that 80 people, some in professions that require strong moral judgement, did this…
“Well, he never raped me so….”. The practice of allowing people to give character statements for convicted sex offenders should be abolished. It means nothing in light of what the offender actually did to their victim(s).
“I knew his mother, lovely woman.”
When were the references given pre or post conviction ?
So Dublin firefighter Terence Crosbie got seven years in Boston for rape and somehow 80 *people* wrote letters to support him. Firefighters, nurses, teachers, even a friar.
One firefighter said he’d have been “up for promotion,” a teacher said it was “inconceivable” he’d hurt anyone, and a priest type said the court should think about how hard this has been on his parents. Seriously? What about the woman he raped?
