Sister remembers her brother, Denys –

“Since childhood, he was into baseball, singing, and ballroom dancing. He always took prize places – both in regional and national competitions. He had many medals.

She is four years older than Denys and said she used to call him “little one.”

“We were always laughing about that nickname. Even though he was younger, he was much taller than me – 180–185 cm, with shoe size 45–46, while I’m 160 cm and wear size 36. Since early childhood, Denys really, really loved animals. He always brought home everyone he found on the street. And it wasn’t just cats and dogs, but also hedgehogs, hamsters, and lizards. Once, he even brought home a snake.”

Denys left behind a dog, Caesar. Tetiana says that the dog misses his owner deeply.

Denys joined the army in January 2025 and served in the 82nd Separate Air Assault Bukovyna Brigade. He fought in the Kursk, Sumy, and Donetsk directions.

“He deeply valued his comrades. He always told me how lucky he was to have them. They supported and helped each other. He always tried to stay positive, never complained, but I could see how hard it was for them there.”

The last time Denys contacted his family was during the night of July 3. After that, he stopped responding. On July 7, the family was informed that Denys had been killed on July 4, 2025, during a combat mission – he died shielding his comrades.

“He was the only man in our family. Our father also passed away in 2023,” Tetiana added. “Denys was 33 years old. Sadly, he didn’t have time to start a family of his own. He had no children, so he adored his niece, Nicole – my daughter. She loved him very much too and thought of him not as an uncle, but as her best friend.

Now the family is collecting signatures for a petition to award Denys “Yarema” Yaremenko the title of Hero of Ukraine.
