      Entire county is fucked, 75% power outage. Food, meds and drinking water in short supply. Roads gone. Houses gone. People dead. And Biddy and Miley are moaning about no one chartering a flight to get them home cos their holiday is shite.

      The fact the goverment lacks a cargo plane and some defence forces for a simple duty like this is yet again another failure 

      Multiple small nations in the EU either have this ability or work with others for it

      I remember when Afghanistan fell ireland had to go around the houses to find spare seats on planes for its citizens

      But hey.. keep talking about how the irish passport is “the strongest in the world”

      Just hope you are never in a situation where you need to depend on that passport to GTFO a shit situation

      Can they just not hire an aerLingus jet. After all Ireland has one of the largest airline leasing company’s in the world. Fly out aid and bring back citizens. Like Sudan, it seems no-one is giving a ****.

      For those that don’t know, hurricanes can be expected around this time of year in that part of the world.

      > The Atlantic hurricane season is the period in a year, from June 1 to November 30, when tropical or subtropical cyclones are most likely to form in the North Atlantic Ocean.

      Aug, Sept and October are the peak of that season.

      If only we had an airforce that could operate rescue flights like most other EU nations.

      Many people are not aware of this, but you can actually seek help from any EU embassy when you’re in a foreign country, and it doesn’t have to be an Irish embassy.

      Under EU rules, an embassy has to give you the same services as they give their own citizens a scheme called consular protection for unrepresented EU citizens.

      This includes help in getting home via another countries evacuation flights.

      God helps those who help themselves. They are booked onto a flight to New York. Until then they will just have to put up with a shower only once a day. Spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayers euros chartering a private flight for them so they can get home a couple of days earlier would be farcical. The taxpayer shouldn’t be on the hook. Let them claim against their travel insurance.

      They should be able to get help at any eu embassy or consulate as long as they still have their passports

      I’ve worked in a country that was decimated by a hurricane. My job dictated that I stay so I wasn’t trying to get out but based on my experience, if the airport is damaged (runway, radar etc) it becomes a fly by sight situation with private, military and relied flights just using it ad hoc. The mobile network is also most likely decimated so trying to communicate with anyone is extremely difficult.

      My advice, given they’re Irish and the embassy isn’t helping, head to the Digicel HQ. There is still a large Irish ex pat staff there and they will have flights in and out themselves bringing in rigging crews etc. They might be able to hitch a ride. Worth a shot.

      Lisa, you’re entitled to have a little moan, it’s an unfortunate situation but don’t go to the newspapers to do that. Fucking hell, talk about being tone deaf.

      A hurricane that has pummeled the country, with people homeless or dead and you’re there safe and sound. Shut the absolute fuck up and deal with it, the world is so much bigger than your little bubble you absolute snowflake.

      The hurricane and it’s carnage is newsworthy but Paddy and Mary being mildly inconvenienced isn’t newsworthy. This isn’t something that RTE should be covering.
