This is a standard tool of the far right. They increase immigrant numbers to grow GDP, but at the same time they scapegoat them and stoke racism and anti-immigrant sentiment.

Conflating regular work migration and illegal or semi-legal migration is problematic. Pretty much every European country needs regular, official work migration. That doesn´t mean that other forms of migration are not a problem.

not sure there is a causation… if anything there is failed promise that was never an option within the framework of the EU. It’s the “vote for me I will give them hell but am moderate enough to be compatible with the EU” kind of approach. Not like far right would have changed anything…
