Honestly I hate Spinless Simon because he’s a pathological liar I’m happy that someone for whatever reason actually started to discuss the issue of migration. I don’t expect anything to happen because it’s FFFG and they don’t get shit done but hey let’s at least discuss.

The kicking they got in the presidential election has activated a new narrative of PR for FG to lean in to the narrative as a means to win some people for the next election.
Risk of alienating some of their core base to attempt to get of FF and SF?
Centre right party moves right. A common theme today, but does it pay off?

FFG are on the ropes post-election & with justice for Harvey still very much on peoples minds.
So they’ve both (Harris & Martin) cracked out the old playbook or attack the left, attack immigrants, attack attack attack. Spread fear & soldify their base. It’s a game to them.

Simon Harris acting like an opposition politician and not someone who was Taoiseach a year ago and leads a party that held the justice brief for the entirety of the last government.

I would expect absolutely nothing else from this spinless little shitweasel to start pissing himself and start blaming immigrants for the issues in this country. There is an honest conversation to be had about immigration in Ireland but Harris and FF/FG are not going to have that conversation. They will just blame immigrants for all of the issue and crime and who cares if people get hurt as long as they might stay in power. Fucking despicable little shitrags the lot of them.

The past few years, all we have heard on the radio from the left is that we need a real debate and discussion on immigration in Ireland.
Then SImon Harris starts a debate and the left go beserk because he said something they don’t like.
hmmm_ on
I would have thought by now that suppressing debates over contentious issues would be seen as counter-productive. I don’t want a far-right government in this country, but every time the Irish Times writes an article I can see their popularity rising. The left didn’t win the election so much as the government lost it as their voter base didn’t turn up, and you’d worry about who that base votes for next.

At a bear minimum thinking immigration is currently too high is at least subjective?
We are in the middle of a housing crisis and the public didnt vote for immigration >100,000 a year for the last 5 years.

I guess if we’re not talking about the state of housing and infrastructure for a while, it’s a win for them. They can deport asany people as they like, it still won’t give young people a future in this country.

You can see how this will lead to FF/FG being slowly more and more far right so clearly, it’s blatant. Watch as new politicians and established ones become more so once we get in the run up to elections.
It’s an absolute disgrace that these two parties show zero regard for the country and would be happy to run a Trump/Farage like government here just to stay in power/existence. I hope they pay for it dearly but this tactical decision to operate this way is going to cause so much harm and destruction.

Real problem that we can’t seem to have a discussion on immigration without it turning into mud slinging to each side.
There are genuine issues and problems in area all around the country.
Immigration hasn’t caused any of these issues. But it’s absolutely exasperated them.
GP care for example was collapsing and then got the double hit of Ukraine and then covid.
GP care around the country is properly broken.
And many more examples.
Where government need to be clear and can’t be allowed wiggle out of , and especially FG is their lax and conservative approach to Governance has allowed just about every core pillar of our country become overwhelmed and broken under a generational event like a war on a European border.
So yes we need a chat about what’s feasible in terms of people we can help, but most importantly it’s about what are they doing to resolve and sort the issues we face.
And as I’ve said all along nothing much while they have Pascal holing the purse strings. Fella still has his communion money. No personal issues with him but he still operates as having scars from being in government when we went through austerity.
We are a wealthy country and need to start acting like it

Strange how so many comments are talking about FF/FG becoming the far right. In Denmark, the far right party was neutered by the main center and left parties taking a more harsh line on immigration

I’ve been saying it for the last few years, FG are spiritually Irish Tories and they’re going to end up using the same playbook as the Tories did. They’ll try and cozy up to the Far Right in the hope that they can persuade them to vote for them, it won’t work, and they’ll end up out on their arses because of it.

The part about this that angers me the most is people were labeled racist, anti immigrant, xenophobic etc for saying what Simon Harris has been saying in the last couple of weeks. Towns and villages the length and breadth of the country were gaslit for years. Now because Harris is saying it, the political class will all start to say it as if it is a belief commonly held among them and they didn’t name-call people for it for a long time.
