*Merz has invited Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to discuss coordinated repatriations*
More than a million Syrians have returned home since the fall of Assad. The EU has pledged to help rebuild the country.

Hot Take, send only the men away, problem solved.

So surely that means Germany will stop Israel bombing and occupying Syrian territory now… right?

This demand is entirely in line with the spirit of asylum law, which is intended to provide temporary protection and not a system for permanent immigration.

And not only syrians

I have aome Syrian friends who have escaped the Assad regime, from what they told me the new regime isn’t much better and in some cases it’s even worse. They don’t plan to go back any time soon.

Wait, didn’t Israel attack the Syrian army a couple of months ago because they were committing a genocide? But I’m sure the former Al-Qaeda member has given him asurances it won’t happen again…

the return of europeanised syrians is fundamentally good but it cannot be forced. I am sure that they’ll return if the syrian state is nice (non violent democracy) enough. Ideally we send them along with a small sum of additional money to get things going there. But it has to be safe for the syrians as well.

I hope european comission will take actions here. Poland was sanctioned for such statements and actions, in this case it will be similar right? because there are no double standards, right?

Syria is going to need an influx of skilled labor and especially the doctors to help with rebuilding their nation. Unfortunately, Syria is not going to be safe unless Merz does the thing him and his coalition find most distasteful: Take a hard stance against Israel.
As long as Israel keep bombing, invading, kidnapping, and stealing territory, Syria can’t be declared safe.
Merz wouldn’t speak against Israel when it was morally right to do so, would he do it when it directly impacts Germany?

Return may be difficult if the situation is better in the host country

Should do the same for Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya

Merz is famous for dropping big statements bevor the details are set in stone. A couple of weeks ago he also said that Mercuso was a done deal.
So take his words with a grain of salt.

This statement came after his Minister of Foreign Affairs (rightfully) assessed that Syria is not safe enough to return too yet. Merz using the same rascist dogwhistles as the AfD will be his downfall.
