Beckham was without a shadow of a doubt one of the most world class players of his generation. I think his celebrity overshadows that at times but he was at times genuinely unbelievable as a player.

I get football but I don’t understand the British society part. The guy has lived outside of the country for years and I only see him on adverts.

He’s a great footballer, for club and country, and he worked on our world cup bids so I don’t begrudge him his honour, but I am a bit confused about what he has done for ‘British society’, can anybody enlighten me?

Taking Qatar’s blood money should have blocked this forever.
Qatar only got their world cup because of bribes, then throw in the treatment of foreign workers, working on the stadiums, and otherwise, and no self-respecting person would have taken their offer to be a paid ambassador. All of this was already known at the time Beckham took them up on their offer. It didn’t come later as a surprise after he’d already accepted.
We’re not talking about the average person in the street here, being offered life-changing millions. Beckham did not need this money, it was easy to show some integrity and say no. However, no, he took their filthy, bloody money and that makes Beckham a total scumbag to me forever. He’s shown his true character – greed, entitlement and no class. His legacy will be forever tarnished.

British Society shouldn’t be there. He’s only really served football, but for everything else he’s just been chasing money like swooning over fascist regimes, being the topic of pointless Netflix programmes and doing product placement. We all remember “nice spice markets” Beckham and Qatar, which lost him a lot of support from Unicef to the LGBT community. Supporting a regime that uses slave labour, kills people for who they are or represses certain demographics isn’t exactly a good image.
He only really got this Knighthood from throwing a tantrum and just generally being a brat anyway. He called those behind previous decisions a load of choice words when he didn’t get his way.
He’s mostly been irrelevant other than when he’s thrust himself into the limelight to give his two pence on football, with the odd dodgy Netflix show in between.
Edit: The Beckham fans are in then.

I guess they forgot the part where he called the committee “cunts” for not choosing him in the past?

No doubt he was a good footballer. In every other aspect he is an entitled clout and money chasing t*t.

That said – he’s a British icon for sport, lot’s of charity work etc, if any athlete deserves it in the UK, it’s probably him. Good on him

He fucked off to the US decades ago.

He is a known user of various tax avoidance schemes that have been struck down in court. I understood this was the reason he had not been knighted sooner. Confused as to why the decision was changed.

The Qatar thing will always be an * on his record.
Much like the Riyadh ‘comedy’ festival lot (recently), Beckham did not need to take that money helping front a petrodollar state’s sports gig.

Incredible player. Helped bridge the gap between the english game and playing abroad. Done an absolute boat load for various charities over the last 20 or so years. Huge part of the team for our world cup and olympic bids. Generally a solid role model for lots of people who grew up watching him play and for what he’s done after his playing career. There’s definitely way worse people who have been given knighthoods than him! pretty well deserved imo

Well that is one way to completely de-value the whole knighthood thing XD

Not got a problem with him at all. Great player and captain, very involved in the world Cup and Olympic bids and a proud brit. More than you can say about a lot of people who receive honours.
