      Well, we couldn’t deliver a new prison because of the usual planning delays and NIMBYism and inability to plan for the future, so we’ve overcrowding putting staff and prisoners at risk, and feeding in to inadequate sentencing too.

      We’re basically incapable of delivering critical infrastructure because of how we’ve structured planning.

      Deaths in prison are utterly tragic every one a failure of the system. Yet we still must hold individuals accountable for serious crimes. What bothers me more: our prison estate is simply creaking under pressure, and we still haven’t built a new facility to tackle this properly

      Seems odd to me we don’t have a Minister of State for Prisons, Sentencing and Rehabilitation given how important and poorly governed that area is

      Why don’t the opposition parties in the Dail ask for more prisons?
