Fuck off Comcast. Yank billionaires going to own, and in short order ruin, every bit of the UK soon.

    2. Pfttt… erm how about no? Don’t even watch TV but that sounds like a terrible idea.

Narrowing the ownership of (broadcast) media is never a good idea. See News International.

Can we not keep selling historic British companies to the highest American bidder

People are already watching more and more American shows too the point that Americanisms are taking over. Hope the government blocks this

It’s been 3 years since I got rid of my TV and everything is fine. Doesn’t surprise me everything continues to be consolidated in to mass concentrations and centralisations of wealth by a small subset of people with a money hoarding addiction and in irrational need to compete with everyone at everything.

Admittedly I do watch The Last Leg on my laptop, but that’s not worth buying a TV for.

I do have a 150″ home cinema though, but that’s only for movies, not broadcast shlop.

ITV is dead in the water. You only have to look at their Christmas offerings from last year to see they were not even trying to compete with the BBC at a time when they knew people would be watching TV. They gave been haemorrhaging advertisers, who have moved to streaming services and YouTube, and can barely keep themselves going. Even the soaps are not bringing in enough viewers anymore. It is all they have now to survive because This Morning and The Chase are not going to keep them afloat forever.

If ever there was a time in history to be weaning ourselves off of US influence, it’s now. And instead we’re steaming ahead full throttle towards 51st state status in all but name. Depressing.

      Looking at these comments…

…should I be feeling like a bit of a tit moving over to Sky Mobile?

    9. Maybe people who work at Sky will correct me, but I didn’t think Sky was in the greatest shape at the moment? Seems an odd time to consider an acquisition.

The pace of technology change is amazing really. Only 20 years ago having a terrestrial TV channel licence, especially number 3 on the EPG was seen a big asset. Now it’s value is continually diminishing until switch off in 2035 when it literally is worth nothing. I just hope ITV studios survives to make original UK content, but I’m not convinced it will.

A reminder that an American owned company will never care about nurturing new British talent (whether that’s writers, producers, actors, set designers, costume designers, editors, etc) as much as a British company. Regardless of what you think of individual shows or celebrities, our creative industries need to be protected and kept in the UK as much as possible.

    12. Yay, late stage capitalism.

Eventually there will just be one company in the world called “The Company” and it will own literally everything in every industry. Governments will be completely powerless against it and reliant upon it. We will all be slaves to the whims of this company.

Christ the triggered on here. ITV is doggo. Get out more.

      The headline’s slightly misleading

The article itself makes clear that Sky is owned by Comcast, but the framing of the headline makes it sound like Sky is doing so well it can afford to buy ITV

      Which has never been true

OFCOM should be all over this. Monopolies developing in broadcast media – any media – should be halted. Without question.

I agree that the sale is essentially a bail out – the future projection is a decline of eyeballs on that medium and that’s undeniable.

I support the deal and it may shake up the content they choose to broadcast on ITV

This has been playing out since early 2000s , Sky had a 17.5% stake in ITV in 2006 stopping a NTL take over but was forced to reduce level to 7% as the Competition Commission ruled against them.
ITV share holders made alot of money as the share price shoot up.

ITV was set up as an alternative to BBC but as a private company profit is its goal .

The 90s to early 2000s brought about its streamlining.

Good region programming creative content has gone along with the region skill base of employees , Now centralized in London with ITV Studios in Salford i.e old Granada (Northern TV Mafia is strong)

Region news remains but it’s a shadow of its former self and the ITN deal in 2007 to supply ITV News delivery.

Will the Competition Commission step in again ?
Will the Secretary of State for Culture Media and sport do anything ?.

After all, their Broadcasting Licence is granted by the government.

I watched this thing, “Douglas got cancelled” on there. It was the last ITV show I watched. It was slop for boomers and turned me off UK dramas for a while.

I don’t want US corporates taking over the whole media landscape here. Hopefully, the government or Ofcom block this.

This is bad news if it happens. I

Combined with the further reduction / removal of the BBC as we know it, I’d say very bleak

This is what happens when you depend on old reliables to bring the cash in for years.

Corrie, Emmerdale, The Chase, BGT… all very dated and stale shows.

Must be getting desperate. Everything they release seems to just flop and be a massive waste of money the past decade.

‘Genius Game’ and Big Brother are two of their most recent money pits.
