Boy A, one of the two teenagers convicted of murdering 14-year-old Ana Kriegel in 2018, has been granted extra time to appeal his life sentence. He was sentenced to life in detention with a review after 12 years for Ana’s murder and 12 years for aggravated sexual assault, to run concurrently.

His lawyers sought more time to appeal following a Supreme Court ruling that life sentences for child offenders should only be given in exceptional cases where the child’s actions and intent are comparable to those of an adult. The court also ruled that sentencing courts do not have jurisdiction to review juvenile detention terms.

At the Court of Appeal, Boy A’s counsel, Patrick Gageby SC, requested the extension, which was not opposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Ms Justice Caroline Costello granted the application, allowing Boy A to proceed with his appeal in light of the new legal precedent.

*It must be heartbreaking for Ana Kriegel’s mother to face more court proceedings after all they’ve endured. Hearing that Boy A can appeal his sentence surely reopens deep wounds and reminds them of their unimaginable loss. Each new development keeps their pain alive when all they want is peace.*

Those two things that murdered that poor girl and what they done to her should never ever see the light of day again, end of story.

What is the actual point in having ‘life’ sentences not be actually for life?

I’m not saying every horrible crime should land you life in prison, but just logically, why do we purposely confuse/mislead ourselves by calling 15 years or so ‘life’? Why not have that sentence be called ’15 years’ and then when we do give someone life, it’s actually life

They are 19/20 now. Why aren’t papers using their real names now. Joke.

So by the sound of the full article the reason the DPP aren’t challenging the extension is they need more time to consider it as well. Presumably because it’s all relatively new with limited precedents.

If I understand it though the issue of the grounds for appeal, the bit about except in exceptional circumstances, is still open so it’s not guaranteed the appeal will work.

What’s so scary is that if these lads get out no one apart from local people know who they are. The danger of the women they may meet later in life is terrifying.

Show them the same mercy they showed Ana. Which was none.

The fact they’d appeal anything shows they haven’t learned anything and are still a danger.

If you had shame you’d sit in the cell and suffer.

Capital punishment would be more suitable in this instance.

They should be named as both are over 18 now. That’s what happens in other jurisdictions. It’s most definitely in the public interest.

As it is premeditated and the they were such a young age , my concern is that he will be a repeat offender.

Honestly I don’t get how appealing a case where you acknowledge you were guilty can show you are remorseful. It seems a contradiction like if you actually were remorseful you would probably say right I should serve the time then try be a better person once I’m out. Honestly if we have parole equivalents in Ireland it really wouldn’t make sense to grant him early release after something like this

Hard to believe that was 7 years ago, I remember reading comments on reddit about it like it was yesterday.
