Considering Germans were under Moscow, and Stalin had a mental breakdown when hearing about the attack. Yes, soviets paid dearly for taking back their territory from germany

Nah, it did not. Stalin wanted to break it as much as Hitler did, it is just the Germans were first.
Politically – there was no backfire at all, after all Soviets helped defeat Germany and that was the image they got after the war. All the enabling they did pre-war (helping Germany re-arm and circumvent treaties, R-M pact, being co-aggressor that started WWII) – Soviet Union fell apart before it started to be a part of their image.

Soviet Union in general was quite successful at backfiring itself in anything they did.
In this case pact was actually a reasonable move from their perspective.
However, they wasted the time it bought them by not preparing for German aggression.
As a result USSR was caught largely unprepared when Germany attacked. It could have been catastrophic, fortunately for everyone, Americans saved them by offering Lend-Lease.
They wouldn’t be able to conduct successful offensive by themselves.
