90% of the people who are condemned to more than 2 years in prison in a first trial are immediately sent to prison. So Sarkozy isn’t being treated exceptionally harshly here. The exception was giving him a full month to prepare first, because usually you go straight from the court to jail. He was treated very leniently by the courts during the whole affair, even though he tried to discredit the entire judicial branch and lies to the press about the proceedings. Which should be a massive no no for a former president, that’s to say someone whose role was to protect the institutions of the republic.

Sarkozy has also been accused of witness tampering in the very case he’s being jailed for. And he was condemned in a previous case for trying to bribe a magistrate to get info on an other case he was involved in (about the illegal financing of his first presidential campaign IIRC). The police caught him by accident during the investigation for the case about Khadafi. He is not a person who doesn’t represent a risk.

But also what is being omitted in this article is that the current minister of justice is a friend of him and publicly supports him.

To be clear, there are genuine legal dispositions that he’s tapping into and that are (in theory) available to everybody. It’s hypocritical for him to do it because his whole thing when he was campaigning for presidency was no tolerance for those who were condemned to more than 6 month in prison. But the request for early release is fortunately not an illegal or illegitimate thing.

What is infuriating is how easier everything is made for him than for everybody else when he’s such a corrupt piece of shit who just keeps piling the illegal stuff, all the while he behaves as if he was a martyr being treated unfairly by a cabal of red judges out for his blood, and while he actively participates in the erosion of the rule of law in the country.

Laws are for poor people. Duh.
