I know this isn’t a popular idea, even within the left. But investing in poorer children is probably the best use of money us as a country can do.
How many more ‘suggests’ and ‘may do’ stories do you reckon will get over the next two and half weeks before we actually get the budget?

That’s all we need. More money out of the Treasury at a time when there’s not enough going in.
The optics of doing this whilst calling singe earners >£50k the ‘broadest shoulders’ would be pretty damn grim.
Is this not borderline self destructive behaviour.
More money to those in benefits, likely taken from working families or those who are planning to start one.
This would give those on universal credit an extra 300 a month for every child right? At what point does it become more viable to sit at home than work a below average wage job?
Makes no sense at all. I really do question if this money actually gets to the children who need it.

I hate these “may” stories, she may also decide that we’re going to spend our entire budget on going to the moon. No-one knows anything until the budget is released.
What is a concern is that there’s so much speculation around it, is it to manage expectations, or is it the press being the press?

No child is going hungry in Britain. It’s completely mental to think anyone in Britain is suffering from an inability to source enough calories.
I didn’t vote for Labour, but I did kind of think that with a lawyer in charge and 14 years of waiting, they would have a coherent plan and the back benches would be behind it.

Whilst I do agree that poor/every child should receive every possible “leg up” coming of taxing the middle class is a bit ridiculous. Should we not tax corporations, the ultra wealthy and explore better options e.g legalising cannabis to boost tax / maybe adding tax to shop bought booze to deter miss use of funds. am I being ridiculous? or are we just decimating the people who got it right once more?
Man, this sub can be depressing at times. So many gung ho guys thinking labour isn’t doing well because they aren’t tough enough.
You cannot tax working people more only to increase benefits.
Do people pay tax if their benefit is over £12,500 ?
Can we pay this in vouchers for kids clothes, food, nappies etc so I’m sure, as a childless person funding it, that it actually goes to the upkeep of the children?
This would be a mistake. So many working families would like child 3 or 4 but simply cannot afford it.
This would just be a big FU to those families.
i’m starting to understand why rough girls pop out babies. im trying to get a mortgage at the minute and its a nightmare, if i had a kid id be top of the list for social housing and be getting my rent paid for me.

Well maybe not the children’s fault but it certainly was their parents. They made the conscious decision to have a large family that needed subsidising by the state. I don’t see why responsible working parents who limited the number of children they had to what they can afford should have to pay more in tax to fund these large families.
To be honest. This is not fair on middle earners who would like to have kids but cannot because they cannot afford the childcare and associated costs.
Why should a Middle earner pay for the kids of the feckless. It is not fair and it is not right.
What about the kids of people who earn over 60k or whatever the limit is? Aren’t they suffering?
So people unemployed having larger than normal families that they can’t afford or support. Ok. Who’s that in modern Britain? Meanwhile my hard earned money that I work 60-80hrs a week is completely robbed from me.
Who would want to be Chancellor? Seriously, she cannot fucking win. She’s been relentlessly criticised for maintaining this Tory policy, calling it anti-working class, inhumane, all the rest of it, but when the idea is floated to remove it, she gets accused of bankrolling feckless benefits claimants at the expense of working people. What a cursed job.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion- But why is the government supporting those who don’t have the resources to manage more than 2 kids but still want to have more than 2 kids

Labour trying to win back some of their waning support by way of rewarding laziness, a lack of ambition, sponging, those who play the system and the genuinely impoverished, whilst at the same time attacking the workers of this county because they don’t fall into any of the aforementioned categories.

Having additional children and pushing your family into poverty is definitely a choice and hence the parent’s “fault”.
I lost all respect when they went back on the decision to scrap the winter fuel allowance.
It was a tough decision. It went down badly. Instead of shouldering it they withered and squirmed and went – backsies!
The very people this benefit benefits will not be the ones voting labour.
