EU on another great achievement. Ban vendors without having EU ones or the ones you have which are worse are far more expensive .
How sure are we that EU commission is targeting the wellbeing, prosperity and privacy of its citizens? we definitely are sure that they are not going for none of those things.

It’s not a good idea; EU countries will buy similar equipment from American companies at a higher cost and will be spied on by the US instead of China.

Good! We definitely need to be cautious about these Chinese government runned companies.

Chinese technology poses the same threats as American technology.

I always find it odd they usually only talk about 5G but completely ignore the fact that there are large amounts of Huawei gear in fixed line fibre to home networks all around Europe. It was very good value and cutting edge, and most operators are driven by their bottom line – not by hypothetical concerns about national security, unless they’re regulated to do so.
If there isn’t a clear policy it’s rather unfair on some of these companies, and it includes a lot of small ISPs too – not just mega corps, but ultimately if there’s going to be a “rip and replace” policy it’s going to have to be subsided. They didn’t do anything wrong. Otherwise the costs will land on consumers and smaller players may fold.
If there’s actually a risk in this it needs to be dealt with, not just some vague policy again.
I mean the reality is there are huge amounts of data traffic, be it random consumers’ home internet, small businesses, large businesses, public bodies, state services etc etc all whizzing though these devices, which could range from passive optical networks to active routers, switches and gateways.

Better late than never, though at this point the Chinese state already have the access and data they need to leverage, blackmail, threaten and impede any pushback on their western ambitions.

Frankly, cutting off reliance from China should along with defending against Russia be the biggest foreign policy priority for EU

I mean, on the other hand our critical infrastructure relies on Azure, a platform from an American company that is bound by the CLOUD Act. Will we ban them too?

This is so schizo. zte is part of open ran so their codebase is partly if not fully the same as the firmware running on samsung, nokia and ericsson gear. Not to mention the really good performance of zte networks.
Huawei ban i can understand. Though not over “security”, rather over their predatory licencing model. They offer gear dirt cheap, then you need to pay a licence fee to actually use the gear. Predatory scum tactics

Ah we’re maybe eying for a full on trade stop with China. That’s the way out of losing against them in the no-longer-free market. Not sure about my confidence on this hypothesis

[UK banned Huawei](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/huawei-to-be-removed-from-uk-5g-networks-by-2027) from 5G mobile networks in 2020.
