In leadership discussions like this, Labour MPs really need to ask themselves two questions:
1. Who do they replace Starmer with?
2. And will anything actually change with this replacement?
If backbenchers can’t give credible answers to those two questions that don’t involve readers laughing out loud, then they don’t deserve to have their complaints taken seriously.
> They insisted that Starmer would fight to retain the leadership in any contest that followed a challenge, either immediately after the budget or, more plausibly, following defeat at the May local elections.
That genuinely seems like more of an encouragement than a threat. I’m sure any challenger from outside the leadership team would rather face Starmer, the most unpopular politician in the country, than someone like Streeting or Shabana (who are also deeply unpopular, just less so).
> A bitter row broke out after No 10 sources said they had grown increasingly concerned over speculation among MPs that Wes Streeting could be planning an imminent coup against the prime minister – a move fiercely denied by the health secretary.
> In a sign of how anxious some in No 10 have become over Starmer’s position, senior figures said they had been told that Streeting had 50 frontbenchers willing to stand down if the budget landed badly and the prime minister did not go.
We know from back during *Beergate* that Streeting, with Mandelson and McSweeney’s backing, was preparing for a leadership bid if things went south for Starmer. The idea that he *wouldn’t* be on manoeuvres now is absurd, and that’s what you get for surrounding yourself with backstabbers.
(And to be frank I wouldn’t be surprised if we find ourselves in a Matteo Renzi style situation, where a leadership election is called, the right of the party loses, then they flounce off and form their own party)
> A third Downing Street source added: “Keir doesn’t realise this is existential for him. But it’s astonishing that MPs think that ousting him might be an answer – the public will just think we’re no different from the last lot.”
The issue is that *the public* are starting to think Labour are *worse* than the last lot. That might not be fair, but Starmer has demonstrated he’s simply incapable of turning that perspective around.
I don’t think any Labour MP will make a move against Starmer before the May local elections. No one will want to become leader and then face a historic loss in Wales and Scotland. But after that I think he’s a goner. You can’t be *this* fucking despised and just keep plodding on. The only alternative I see is if the Labour right now the jig is up, and decide to oust Starmer and try to install a new leader on their own terms, which could explain Wes’ actions.
I don’t care about his popularity ratings just give the guy a chance it’s only been a year. Everyone’s attention span is so short, as if massive problems in this country can be resolved so quickly. Surely we’re exhausted from all the PM changes, it’s not the answer.
Starmer is fucked. Either December or June after the may elections
Its pretty difficult to challenge Starmer it would almost certainly need to be a Cabinet Minister or possibly the new Deputy Leader, they need to gather the support of 20% of Labour MP’s so that’s 83 of the current PLP and they need to announce the challenge before gathering the signatures.
The NEC set the rules of the contest and will manage the entire process and can make any decisions regarding it as they see necessary. Unsurprisingly the NEC is full of Starmer Loyalists so bit of an uphill struggle already.
They challenger needs to get it done before Conference where the results are announced so they have missed this year already and its a long way to September 2026.
They also need the support of two big unions and chunk of the Local Parties before the ballot paper is printed and sent out to members.
its incredibly divisive and will almost certainly split the party and kick off a Labour Civil War, not what you need in the run up to a GE. Its probably better to wait until he resigns and run as the candidate that can bring the team together again.
This massive drop in popularity is a bit bizarre.
I feel the amount of coverage the polls get is having a cyclical effect in which people believe Starmer is unpopular because they’re told he is unpopular.
But why are so many polls coming out 4 years from an election?
Allies – Keith doesn’t have any!
Described by senior members of the party as follows.
“He thinks he’s driving the train, but the train is the DLR”.
There’s no one on the front bench that the U.K. will get behind. If Labour have any chance of survival then it’s going to have to be a scorched earth with Andy Burham and his own team coming in.
Im a lifelong labour voter and I don’t see an out unless the budget is moderate, which based on Reeves appalling, completly bizarre preemptive speech, doesnt give much hope. Increasing income tax, something they said they WOULD NOT do in their manifesto, will be an absolute death knell. Working people are on their knees trying to make ends meet, combine that with little to zero growth, uturns on benefit reform and little change on illegal immigration – a year isn’t enough time, but nothing beneficial has emerged from their time in office. It’s over unless they can play a Hail Mary that no one can see coming.
Without a substantial change in political strategy and policy, simply replacing the Labour leader and Prime Minister will be futile, and extremely damaging.
His next move will be to proscribe the Labour Party
There’s a very similar article just up on the BBC –

Someone’s on manoeuvres – my guess is Streeting.
“It’s terrible. He [Starmer] is hated out there. It is worse than it got under Corbyn. I don’t see how this is sustainable until May,” one minister said.
Corbyn lost two elections in a row against an historically unpopular Tory party, it’s a long way from being that bad.
This is such an inside Westminster story. Despite the shrill voices of 3 week old accounts on here, there’s very little appetite in the country for any sort of change, election, whatever. What people generally want is for politics to go away for a few years and be boring.
This government may not be exactly dynamic, but they’ve done a bunch of really good stuff (that gets almost ignored by the press or commentariat) and they’ve managed not to do anything as colossally stupid as Truss’ omnishambles budget, Brexit, etc. etc. I’m reserving judgment until much closer to the election, personally.
I don’t see why they would even want to replace him?
Because he’s losing public appeal against Farage 3 years before an election? Big fucking woop?
The local elections that Farage won, have shown how fucking aweful Reform actually are at running anything.
Labour’s policies have just starting to come though as well, we’ve barely even seen their policies start to hold ground.
Immigration is down almost 50%?!
The economy has stabilised and is projected to be the fastest growing of G7 (although I guess when you’re starting from Tory levels this isn’t really fair comparison).
Funding for infrastructure has sky rocketed…
NHS recruitment is finally turning around.
Trains are FINALLY coming back into the public ownership.
Nuclear power plants have finally been added back into the conversation as we move away from coal/gas.
I mean frankly… it’s been a year and half. So far I’m positive as fuck.
The ONLY issue is the papers and media would have you believe the country is going to hell in a hamper because of the “asylum” seekers. Of which we have too many yes, but it’s not a massive issue anymore, not as massive as the media would have you believe at least.
That’s what happens when you’re coming out with fucking batshit policy rumours…
for fucks sake, this is how you get a farage government
Well we just had a Labour Peer on news night or whatever the fuck spout a load of transphobic shite so tbh im not really feeling anyone in Labour right now
The budget will most likely be soul crushing so I expect him to be out as Prime Minister by early next year. Streeting or Powell will be the most likely sucessors imo.
My issue with this is that Starmer is the elected PM. Removing him would cause the chaos we seen with Truss / Rishi that nobody voted for.
Yet the situation for Labour dire and this government just rotten and in a bad way. It also free fall atm. So what else can they do to save themselves
