Emmanuel Macron is thinking about inviting Chinese President Xi Jinping to the 2026 Group of Seven summit in France and the idea has been discussed with some allies, according to people familiar with the matter.

It comes with the French leader considering plans to travel to China in December, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing internal deliberations. In response to a request for comment, officials at Macron’s Elysee Palace said France wants to engage with major emerging nations that are willing to help tackle global imbalances.

With the G-7 sinking into irrelevance and the US blowing off the G-20 this month, Macron is betting that he can redefine the informal grouping that is heavy on Europeans and short of the kind of players that Trump wants to engage with and will travel to meet.

It’s normal for G-7 hosts to invite guests to attend parts of the leaders’ meeting — in 2019, Macron surprised leaders with an appearance from then Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif — but the spots are usually reserved for nations, like Australia, that are more aligned with the G-7 democracies.
In recent years, G-7 discussions have become increasingly focused on how to manage China’s growing influence, with sessions on how to protect supply chains from disruption by China and how to counter Russia’s war against Ukraine — where the G-7 nations see Beijing as a key enabler.

That means there would most likely be a tense discussion if Macron can pull off his diplomatic coup.
Indeed, it is unclear whether the Chinese leader would accept such an invitation, some of the people said, or whether other G-7 members would be open to the move.

French officials raised the idea discreetly with German counterparts and Berlin is generally supportive of the idea, a person familiar with the matter said.

As the geopolitical rivalry between Washington and Beijing heats up, European nations have been fighting for relevance and trying to create the leverage to defend their own interests. The G-7 format itself is a relic of the Cold War period, long before the emergence of rivals like China or India to challenge the economic dominance of the US and its allies.

While it doesn’t reflect the distribution of global economic power in 2026, it does give Europeans a platform to shape events. In 2019, Macron took full advantage of that platform and, with his second and final term in office due to end in 2027, the early signs are that he may be planning to do so again next year.

We’re moving from a bipolar world to a tripolar world.

I’ll probably be down voted to hell for this. But I stand by it.

I think that’s a bad idea, China is just as bad, if not worse, than Russia. The only difference is that Russia took its mask off, China hasn’t. Yet.

Not sure it’s a good idea or even a serious proposal but even suggesting is a nice slap in the face for Trump.

Yes, allow the fox into the chicken pen. Great idea.

That could be a nice gesture from France, and I think China will greatly appreciate that. But the only leader that worths Xi’s time among G7 is POTUS, namely Trump at this moment.

Why do people treat this as if macron wants to make china the G-8? this is an invitation as a guest, very generous of him but this is not an economic alliance with Beijing lol

So our response to China for giving crucial weaponry parts and money to Russia in their war against Ukraine is an invite to the G7?

I think in an ideal world the US leaves NATO and Europe is more neutral to China and the US is more neutral between Russia and Europe.

Probably less conflict in the long run.

Oook, what are the French trying to sell now? The authoritarian dictatorship that’s casually threatening to invade a sovereign country and attempts to hack and undermine all our democracies on the daily? Suuuure, have them over for tea.

Dialogues are good. You don’t have to agree with what he might say, but it’s better to listen to what he says. You are facing the adversary in real life, not the adversary in your imagination.

Heh this is to pee on Trump’s banana bread because he wanted Russia in there

This is really kind of pointless IMHO. The only G7 nation with real power and influence in this world is the US. The others are just vassal/client states of the US. So it would be way more effective for America and China to negotiate and the others can be given their marching orders.
