The minister, however, appeared to embrace the longshot bid, hinting that it was part of the government’s strategic realignment away from the US and towards Europe.
“I think it’s a platform for Canada to shine,” Champagne told broadcaster Global News last week. “This is about protecting our identity – yes, we want to protect our sovereignty, but you also want to help people in the arts sector and in the film industry to make sure they can shine around the world. And we have a lot to offer as Canadians.”

There’s nothing about our identity that a pageant is going to protect.

Eurovision should only be for European countries.
People on here are only supporting Canada’s entry for political reasons.

Totally support this. If we can have Australia competing, we can certainly have Canada.

Protecting Canadian – or anyone´s identity – is better served by ignoring that shitshow.

To all the clueless people around here saying how “Eurovision is just Europe”, there have been non european countries competing for a long time. You don’t need to be an european country, you need to be a member of EBU or an associate member that was invited (after asking). Australia is not a member of EBU but was invited after asking (associate member) and they participate. Canada, Brazil, USA, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Mauritius, Iran, China , Cuba can for example all participate if they ask

Canada is the lad hiding the zombie bite from the group.
As someone with a Canadian wife, the Canadian stereotype everyone has in mind exists 20 years in the past. They’ve absorbed too much American politics and culture. Best leave them where ye found them.

Next year will be the 70th edition of Eurovision. For the 60th edition Australia got a special invitation to perform in the finale. Maybe it would be fun to give Canada the same special invite for next year’s edition.

I guess they are already an EBU associate member, so why not

As a Canadian I see Eurovision as a more fun Olympics. In that it’s a bunch of countries coming together to make art. Weird fucking art. And I love it. Would love to have Canada join.
