      Just want to correct some of the misinformation there:

      * “People from abroad applying for a UK Student Visa from today must show bank statements proving that they meet new, higher maintenance requirements.” – in fact many countries are exempt from this

      * “New tougher rules on refusing visas for migrants convicted of crimes will be imposed from November 11. The Home Office has removed previous flexibility and introduced mandatory refusal for certain serious offences. A visa application will now be refused if the applicant has received a custodial sentence of 12 months or more, regardless of how long ago the offence occurred.” In fact this is not true for family members. See FM GEN 3.2 – the decision maker MUST consider ECHR Article 8 concerns when refusing ANY family member application.
