A truly truly bizarre story. As far as I can make it, a few people in No 10 genuinely thought that Streeting is going to make a move after the budget (which will be a terrible time to make a move), so they decided to call up all the journalists they know and tell them that Streeting is hatching a plan.

Then it all backfired because Starmer never authorised such briefings in the first place, and the chaos that ensued only weakened his position in the party. Now a challenge after the local elections is much more likely than before because the PLP will know how unsustainable it is to have him as PM.

The only way this can make sense is (tin foil hat on) McSweeney _wants_ to strengthen Streeting’s position, because he recognises that Starmer’s usefulness to the Labour Right has exhausted, and it’s time for someone of the Labour Right to be PM.
