It is not lost, it is just kept out of state control. Those are two different things.

It’s a case where the direction of the gradient isn’t quite what I expected. This is basically a proximity-to-Turkey map.

Good, the less money that reaches the coffers of the corrupt state that steals and squanders it, the better.

This could also be a map showing how good countries are at tax fraud.

In Germany it is only this low because here corruption was legalized andcis callen “Nebeneinkünfte” which literally translates to side hustle…
Stuff like giving a 15 minute speach at any given corpo event and cashing in 20k € for it… Thats for sure for the tremendous expertise a politian can transport in 15 minutes…

I’m surprised Spain isn’t worse, I’ve even met an Architect who was forced to work in the grey economy (no contract, paid in cash) by her employer in Barcelona.

In Poland most of private bulding/renovation work and also car repairs are paid in cash with no receipt. Also most of single-person services when I think about it, like chimney cleaning and other maintenance.

By which sources? In 2023 Ukraine’s shadow economy was estimated to be about 19% by Ernst & Young, but about 40% by our government. The source really does matter with such statistics.

Odd colour choice, there’s a “grey area” not included in the legend. Is it 100%? It looks pretty grey.

Between 20-25% in Poland? Doubt. There is about 10-15%.

That’s what you get for having a corrupt government that does fuck all useful with your tax money and pockets most of it I guess. There seems to be a direct correlation each and every single time.

Can someone kindly explain what this is? Through contextual clues: payments made in cash that don’t get taxed? Maybe?

I see a lot of gray over Ukraine, Balkans and Belarus. Thank you for informative visualization!

When did Spain clean itself up?
The grey economy certainly used to be bigger.

After living in both countries for many years I honestly won’t believe the gray zone in Poland is bigger than the one in Spain.

EU funding calculations should honestly be including the shadow economy. It is bullshit that countries that put in real effort to declare their income get punished by having to pay more.

How on earth have they collected the data for this
