Cosa ne pensi: l’Irlanda dovrebbe puntare a una maggiore copertura forestale? Dovremmo concentrarci sul rewilding/specie autoctone piuttosto che sulla silvicoltura commerciale?
Yep and the stuff that coillte is replanting create ecological dead zones.

It used to be far lower.
Even outside of woods and forests the reduction in sheep farming has made a massive difference in west cork /kerry.

Yes everyone knows. Our so called forests are pallet timber maybe not even that. MDF etc
It’ll take generations to get native woodland to a meaningful %.

Our figure is less when you except for plantations of non-native species grown for commercial purposes
It’s really misleading when these numbers count anything other than native forests.

It’s true there are very few natural areas in Ireland, but that’s the metric we should be looking at rather than specifically “forest” which includes spruce plantations. In particular we need to preserve bogs and protect more areas from overgrazing.

That said we should be aiming for 30%

Oh boy. Now just take the percentage of actual Atlantic forests that are native and not pine tree farms. Last I checked it was lower or aroundr 1%

Most of that 12% isnt even forest, its sikta spruce plantation.

You can see this when you fly over Europe. We don’t have the vast areas of woodland that other countries have

Blame the the british for this as they chopped our forrests for there frigate fleets way back then and it has never recovered.

Irish people have a weird relationship with trees. I think that many regard trees as overgrown weeds, dangerous, and only good for firewood. My older relatives especially are like this.
Even just check out rural homes here, with their huge empty lawns. In the UK and Germany, rural homes can barely be seen behind lovely mature trees. Same as the homes of British/German ‘blow ins’ in West Cork and Kerry. The first thing they do when they buy here is plant, plant, plant.
