So much for all the ridiculous “If ThE Uk WaNtS BeNeFiTs iT HaS To PaY!!” and “Uk WaNtS ThInGS FoR FreE!!” comments I had to read about this when it was first reported.

For anyone who doesn’t know and can’t be bothered to read articles or use google, the UK **is** paying for our half of the deal by agreeing to the other stuff the EU asked us for earlier in the year.

      >Talks on reducing red tape for food and drink imports – which have been contributing to stubbornly high food inflation in the UK – were set to be derailed by demands from France that Britain begin paying into EU funds immediately as the price for access to the single market.
But a coalition led by Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium and Luxembourg warned that pushing too far now could derail the reset before talks even begin.

Article suggests that France seems to have dropped the demand for UK to pay into the EU funds/budget immediately, but I feel this is going to get picked up once the talks begin. The EU still has a UK sized budget hole that it will try its best to fill despite not being upfront about it in May 2025..

To be honest, I think the UK should go all in on Brexit instead of trying to re-integrate back with the EU. Revanchists within the EU will want their pound (or kilogram) of flesh from Britain, there’s no viable path forward for an equitable relationship.

All of this is so stupid. The UK leaving before trying to rejoining literally every european projects with a separate negotiation.

Maybe because the UK has shown realism and professionalism and the UK gov is not acting like a circus (see BoJo and Truss)

      There is an EU budget.
It is defined what each member pays.
If UK joins again there is two ways to do it.

Make it count from 2028 and the new EU budget. Or if its sooner then calculated the “owed” percentage based on the current EU budget.

If UK wants to influence the next EU budget, they will have to fast track the application. Swallow some camels in order to appease the current EU members.

Not joining before 2028 means zero influence on the EU membership fee and accept whatever is agreed by the current 27 EU members.

Regardless of what happens the UK position is weak. What UK had is lost, and doubtful it can regain it. That means acceptance of the euro and no rebates on the EU budget.

The other option is accepting EU legislation like Norway does, and then pay for the access to the EU market.
UK can keep its pound, but not gain EU influence on policies.
