We need to scrap our reg plate system. It leads to so much snobbery and keeping up with the Jones.

Most people can’t tell what age or year (or even model) a car is without it being plastered on the plate.

Car free now for 3 years and its the second best financial decision ive ever made, ive had to use gocar maybe once a year, asides to that its all bicycle, walking and public transport. Amazing how little you need a car in urban areas when you put a bit of effort in.

The uncomfortable idea to wrap our heads around is that cars need to go on the scrap heap sooner rather than later. Our reliance on motor vehicles is destroying our country.

  6. Users are only partly responsible.. We voted for a government that builds mandatory roads and b ythere design makes motoring almost mandatory, but then they outsource the means to use that roads to bunch of foreign car companies and allow marketing budgets to run wild?????

Its a bit like flying in the old days, but we also compete on how fancy and expensive the flight to destination is… So instead of being proud of our 10eur flight all of us when we travel would be aiming to in 1st class or private even.

ITs a crazy good deal for car manufacturers, here is a compulsory product and they influence the government to provide the infrastructure and they also got to make the rules ( regulatory capture) and they get investment tax incentves and tehn we produce cars at every price point…

Govt with big EU car making coutries is not our freind here.. Ideally they should be forcing car industry to come up with ryanair model….. Basically all laws and R&D are about safety and low cost and then force car companies to become transport companies and they must produce modes of transport at all cheapest points….. e.g. scooter, bike, bus, shared car, private car and make car companies responsible for that safety…. The feckers talk enough in backrooms about car standards, well they can also spend more time talking about safety, economy and the environemtn…

Guilty of buying more than we deserve? How dare anyone aspire to have something nice, should we just changeover to full communism to ensure that everyone get same Lada??

That’s in line with: travel less, live in smaller houses, drink less and so on. Just stop enjoying life for?

A lot of people driving bigger cars are using PCP to purchase them or taking out huge loans and wasting money on cars they can barely afford as they’ve been brainwashed in to thinking it’s some kind of status symbol.

The shift in children’s car seats and travel systems has had a massive influence in what a family car has to be now- Especially if you are the kind of parent who wants to keep them rear facing until their mid-primary school. We have a bigger car because it needs to accommodate two car seats and a decent pram- the days of sticking five kids into the back seat is long gone.

Im on my third estate car in a row. It’s comfortable, very spacious, has a substantially bigger boot than most SUV’s and Crossovers & has great fuel economy.

Go into mainland Europe on holidays and see how many families drive them. They’re such a practical car and a serious number of them look really good. I’ve managed to convert a few people over and they all swear by them.

I really dislike the endless conveyor of shite crossovers and this article hits the nail on the head about the problems with them.

Might have something to do with insurers and their shithousery quotes for anything over the age of 11 years old.

Was in Berlin recently and the amount of bangers on the road was eye opening. Like 98-99 models of Opel Astras, Toyota Corollas and Ford Kas

Here, I rarely see anything from 2007/08.
