Mobile fire groups – small crews operating around the clock against kamikaze drones and low-flying targets – are on constant alert. Their mission is precise: reach a designated position in their sector, occupy a point from which they can engage a target, and open fire.
It’s not just constant tension; it’s physically and technically demanding work. They navigate by map, sound, or tablet data – in darkness – where reaction time is measured in seconds.
According to the fighters, changes in drone tactics over Kharkiv affect not only the number of drones but also the profile of their flights.
“They fly them high… Some of the Shaheds now fly at two to three kilometers – beyond the reach of the mobile group’s machine gun positions,” says ‘Kipish,’ chief sergeant of the mobile fire battery.
The group’s work is often invisible. If a target doesn’t enter their sector or flies too high, the fighters remain in position, waiting for the all-clear. It’s a routine but deadly duty, where every night could be decisive – when the darkness obeys them, not the other way around.
