I’ve never had much time for conspiracy theorists but it is so plain to see it’s not even a conspiracy. Golden age of the internet has been over for a while but the next age is gonna be so shit. Enjoy it while it lasts

I don’t like it but I can sorta see the need, with all the bot accounts.

Not the way.
1) Allow fully anonymous websites, eg Reddit.
2) Require ID for websites in which the user is expected to be a real person, eg Facebook
3) Make a user choose whether they are anonymous, or real, for websites like Twitter, on signup.

I’m not sure you can put the genie back in the bottle at this point, but I’d agree with the view that online anonymity has been a detrimental thing to society.

They just can’t handle not knowing every single bit about you. I shouldn’t have to identify myself on the Internet just like I don’t have to identify myself if I participate in a protest

Is there no freedom of speech written into founding charters that would preclude this stuff?
Valahul77 on
This would be hard to impossible to implement in practice. Anyone can VPN to any country these days where Ireland has no jurisdiction.

Good. Put the Russian/Chinese/American trolls and bots away

Good luck. In the era of VPNs and all kinds of shitfuckery, this is one of the things that are definitely not happening. How about policing your fucking coastlines a little better?

Unpopular opinion. This is a good thing. Anonymous internet is ruining society.

The only way to guarantee genuine interactions online is through verification of ID.
This is absolutely necessary in today’s world of AI bots and indian bot farms. Free speech doesn’t come from being anonymous and never did, nor should it.
100% essential. It also doesn’t mean you have to publish your name with the account – just gets verified when you register.
I would like to see the ID country of origin being published though so I know when I am talking to an indian bot farm worker.

Should ban the non anonymous too, social media is a plague.

We have maybe 2 years maximum left of a somewhat free internet in Europe. Was fun, as I’m going offline the day Wikipedia asks for my ID and reason fr visiting, the internet is a free space, noone tells me what I can say (try me UK) or what content to consume.

Surely the only people who would oppose this are bots from Moscow? I don’t have anything to hide and other good people wouldn’t either.

I don’t understand, aren’t these the kinds of things that happen in Russia’s terrible, authoritarian, and controlling dictatorship?

There was a riot in Dublin last year after an immigrant attacked a child with a knife .
Social media was awash that night with posts hyping up the violence and generally stirring the shit, it subsequently turned out a huge % of these posts were from anonymous accounts outside Ireland .

Its wild, all the stories of people being forced to surrender details of their social media when trying to enter the US gets rightly criticised on this sub but when our own governments look to do the exact same – only to their own citizens, plenty of people running around acting like it is necessary.
