Honestly, this would be a great thing for both Europe AND the US.
All but 2 NATO members (and >50% of the population) are European, and the bloc was established specifically to secure Europe (North America by extension). That said, the UK, French & Germans should head it up. That simply provides more localized control of the bloc for the majority of the population.
America’s focus has shifted more towards Asia over the past 20+ years, and I don’t think a valid argument exists in which Europe isn’t secondary to Asia for US strategic interests. For the US, a back seat role in NATO would free up bandwidth, assets, man-power, for the Pacific.
It’s 2025, not 1990. NATO is strong enough to effectively protect itself w/o American leadership.
Next up, Europe sends every American military member, DoD civilian, and contractor from every base in Europe back to the US.

Best idea ever. It is insane for the EU to subjugate its collective nations’ security to the U.S. military industrial complex. What existed in the Cold War as a beneficial mutual deference has since the fall of the Soviet Union served only as a means by which the U.S. meddles and perverts the national security interests of other NATO members. If ever there was an organisation well past its Sell-By date it is NATO. The EU (and Canada, and the UK) needs a made in EU/UK/Canada collective nation security policy entirely separate and apart from U.S. profit driven war mongering. That all said, I hereby summons the fragile psyche septic downvotes.
