When they ask for handouts from the taxpayer, remember that the German carmakers alone paid out about 80bn to shareholders over the last decade or so, instead of re-investing even a fraction of that amount into things like chip-autonomy increasing measures.

Honest question why are our governments so dumb? I understand the mechanics that lead to non-existent long term planning, companies offshoring “everything” for a good few quarters, and the dynamics at play that make our public discussion focus on bullshit agenda and topics that are irrelevant, but this type of decision and outcome is just complete incompetence. You would be fired (or worse) if you made this type of decisions at any semi competent firm, but these politicians simply get away with the most retarded decisions that don’t serve any European interest.
